Precut vs bulk PPF: the labor math for a small shop

Bulk installation, where film is pulled from the roll and trimmed on the car, is how most installers learn and how many still work. Precut kits replace the trimming with plotter-cut panels. The trade-off is simple to state and worth putting numbers on.

Time

A skilled bulk installer trims a full front in roughly 60–90 minutes on top of the lay. With a precut kit that trimming is gone: the same tech lays a full front in 2.5–3.5 hours including prep and post-heat. On a two-car day that is an extra car a week from the same bay.

Waste

Bulk layout wastes 15–20% of the roll; nesting on a plotter wastes 8–12%. On a roll of premium film that runs about $1,500, that gap is roughly $90 per roll, or $30 per full front, before you count the panels that get re-pulled after a bad trim.

Risk

Trimming on the car puts a blade next to clear coat for an hour. Everyone who bulk-installs has a story. A precut kit has no blade on the paint, and edges are cut where the pattern says they wrap, so the finish is consistent between techs.

Training

Bulk PPF takes months to get good at because every panel is a freehand cut. Laying precut is squeegee, heat and tuck, which a detailer who already does tint or vinyl picks up in a few kits. This is why detailers and tint shops can add PPF with precut and rarely with bulk.

When bulk still wins

  • Vehicles that are not in a pattern library yet (very new models, exotics, heavily modified cars).
  • Installers who want wrapped edges beyond what the pattern provides and are willing to trade time for it.
  • Shops with their own plotter and software, where the question becomes cut-yourself vs send it out.

The middle path

Most shops we cut for run precut for fronts and full bodies and bulk for the odd panel or the car the library does not know. Order the kit, keep a roll for edge cases.
